Excavation work in the 1960’s uncovered the remains of a 12th-century village in what now makes up the Krummes Fenn nature reserve. Built on approximately eight hectares of the historical site, surrounded by gardens and fields, the Museum Village Düppel displays replicas of homes, storehouses and workshops from the Middle Ages.

Since 1995, the open-air museum has been part of the Stadtmuseum Berlin as a place of experience in the countryside. An exhibition in the reception building and various themed stations in the open-air grounds are dedicated to the Middle Ages, also with regard to a more sustainable future. On all opening days there are historical children's games , and young and old can try their hand at archery (5 shots for 1 euro). There is also crispy bread on a stick from the open fire (except during the holidays). By the way: dogs on a lead are welcome in the open-air museum!

##### Visitor advice

The oak trees in the open-air museum are highly affected by the caterpillars of the oak processionary moth this year. Please therefore keep your distance from the trees. For persons with a known tendency to allergic complaints, we currently advise not to visit.

Thanks to the voluntary commitment of the members of the Förderverein Museumsdorf Düppel e. V., the Middle Ages can be experienced up close here at weekends. Food is cooked in the houses, wood is carved and wool is made into clothing. Medieval crafts are also demonstrated, such as blacksmithing, pottery and bronze casting. Thanks to the Grunewald Foundation, in 2023 it was also possible to set up a ropery.

## The Village Square

![Links ein Schild, auf dem "Museumsgarten" steht, daneben ein Zaun aus Holz, Blick ins Grüne](https://www.stadtmuseum.de/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_52671-300x200.jpg) A visit to the museum garden is worthwhile at any time of the year. Here you can find plants that were planted in the Middle Ages and some of which are still used in natural medicine today.

The village square is modelled on a medieval settlement from the period between 1170 and 1220. The replica houses provide insight into life in the Middle Ages. They are built and maintained by the Förderverein Museumsdorf Düppel e.V. and open to guests at weekends between March and November.

##### Förderverein Museumsdorf Düppel e.V.

**About**
The goal of the association, founded in 1975, is to recreate historically accurate medieval life as it might have looked around 1200 at the present location of the museum.

**Living History** The association is divided into various working groups that deal with the maintenance of the reconstructed dwellings in the Düppel Museum Village, crafts and garb, and agriculture in the Middle Ages. The members thus bring living history to the Zehlendorf open-air museum.

**Are you interested in the activities and actions of the association? Then take a look at the [website](https://www.dueppel.de/)!**

> As an open-air laboratory, the Düppel Museum Village is a living field of research and experimentation. Exciting projects about medieval life are communicated in an easily understandable way.

![Drei Schafe grasend in einem Waldabschnitt auf dem Gelände des Museumsdorf Düppels](https://www.stadtmuseum.de/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/IMG_20201013_105726-300x225.jpg)

Old livestock breeds, such as the endangered sheep breed Skudde, are also present in the museum village. The ecological animal husbandry is embedded in the biodiverse landscape concept. This is because the sustainable treatment of nature is also part of the educational work.

##### Touch it? Try it out? Yes, but...

In the Düppel museum village, you can experience the Middle Ages with all your senses. In the exhibition and on the open-air grounds, specially marked stations invite you to hear, feel and smell. Outside of these stations, however, we kindly ask you to ask our staff on site in advance whether you are allowed to explore something with your hands or not - both for your own safety and out of respect for the people, animals, plants and objects in the museum.

##### RETOLD

Since December 2020, the Stadtmuseum Berlin and the Museumsdorf Düppel have been participating in the EU project "RETOLD". In this project, a cross-museum strategy for documenting archaeological building reconstructions and historical craft techniques is being developed. The Düppel Museum Village presents the work of the open-air museum in videos and at the same time digitizes knowledge that is relevant for museum work.
