# What we do

# What we do

The Stadtmuseum Berlin brings together the past, present and future, with a focus on people and their stories.

With our [collections](https://www.stadtmuseum.de/en/collection), [exhibitions](https://www.stadtmuseum.de/en/exhibitions) and[ programs](https://www.stadtmuseum.de/en/program), we offer unique approaches to past and current developments in the city. Together with the diverse urban community, we develop new perspectives and promote polyphonic narratives.

We are firmly committed to democracy and diversity and condemn all forms of discrimination, marginalisation and right-wing extremism.

In doing so, we contribute to a respectful and appreciative coexistence in a diverse, open and visionary Berlin. The basis for our collecting, our programme, our interaction with each other, our dealings with our visitors and our cooperation with partners is the [Canon of Values of the Stadtmuseum Berlin](https://www.stadtmuseum.de/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/wertekanon-ssb-en.pdf).

> One of Germany’s largest museums of cultural history, we tell the story of Berlin from its prehistory and early history to the present day.

Spread across six exhibition sites and a central depot, our unique collection comprises several million objects. With the opening of the Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Palace, we have added the BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition to our list of locations. This site for discovery, communication and participation focuses on Berlin’s connections with the larger world.

The Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, Landesmuseum für Kultur und Geschichte Berlin, is a public-law foundation in Berlin. It is also supported in its work by the commitment and donations of a variety of individuals and institutions.

Our non-profit mission under our Museum Foundation Act, is to collect, preserve, care for, and research works of art and other cultural assets related to Berlin’s culture and history; to make them accessible to the public in permanent and temporary exhibitions, in a suitable way for museums, that enables the study of the collections as well as their use for public education.

## Non-Discriminatory Language

In order to fulfil its public mandate and live up to its own standards, the Stadtmuseum Berlin strives to use language that is sensitive to issues of discrimination in both its visual and written communications. Consequently, all texts (website content, event descriptions, press releases, newsletters, social media posts, flyers, etc.) are written in a gender-neutral manner.
