Discover eight hundred years of history and culture in Berlin’s oldest surviving church building! Since the Middle Ages, St Nicholas’ Church has been the heart of the Niklai Quarter and of Berlin. In the past, it was a place of worship. Today, as a museum, it tells the story of its architectural history, its history as a church, and the history of the city of Berlin.

Of particular interest to families is the model of the medieval twin towns of Berlin and Cölln. Here, children and adults can explore together which buildings from that era still stand and what the area looks like today.

On the Day of Action, a German language guided tour of the permanent exhibition Berlin’s Middle offers deeper insights into the history of the area. There are also two special exhibitions: ‘Fighting over Stones?!’ uses six video stations to explore the colonial past of Berlin’s St Nicholas’ Church. ‘Who Ruled the City?’ examines the church, power and coexistence before 1800, offering new perspectives on seven objects on display in the permanent exhibition.

An audio guide for families takes visitors on a tour of the museum with exciting stories in German. There is also a museum treasure hunt designed especially for children, available in German, English, Turkish, Polish and Arabic, illustrated by the Berlin-based comic artist Mawil.

The ‘Sunday at the Nikolai Quarter’

Every first Sunday of the month, we offer a packed programme of events for everyone at our three museums in the Nikolaiviertel. Families are especially welcome – admission is free for everyone under 18 or eligible for concessions. So look forward to some great activities at the Ephraim-Palais, the Nikolaikirche and the Knoblauchhaus!

Our solidarity-based pricing model offers free admission to adults who can provide proof of eligibility for concessionary rates, including students, apprentices, those undertaking voluntary social service (FSJ), environmental service (FÖJ) or federal voluntary service (BFD), people with severe disabilities, refugees, recipients of basic income support or unemployment benefit (ALG I), and many others. Everyone else pays only the museum admission fee and can benefit from our particularly affordable combined ticket for all three museums. The extensive programme of events is included in the price!
