The Library of the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin

The library in the rooms of the Poelzig Hall in Spandau supports the work of the Stadtmuseum Berlin. The focus is on the culture and history of Berlin, in exceptions also the Mark Brandenburg. In addition, the acquisition of literature is oriented to all collection areas and exhibition projects of the museum.

The holdings include approximately 120,000 media units (monographs, periodicals, publishing publications, “gray literature” and exhibition catalogs) as well as various special collections, including:

  1. almost all Berlin court calendars and address books,
  2. Brandenburg local history and district calendars as well as
  3. the collection Variety – Circus – Cabaret
  4. and much more.

The entire collection is catalogued in terms of form and content and can be searched online using the form on this page. External visitors can use the library as a reference library after registration.

Hint

Please understand that loans are made exclusively to the staff of the Stadtmuseum Berlin. However, copying facilities are available. Photographs for work purposes are also permitted by arrangement on site.

The library of the Stadtmuseum Berlin was established in 1874 with the founding of the Märkisches Provinzial-Museum as a collection and working library. In addition to the employees of the museum, the library has also been available to the public since its beginnings. 

The library is a member of the German Library Association (dbv), the Working Group of Art and Museum Libraries (AKMB) and the OPL Working Group Berlin-Brandenburg (One-Person-Libraries). It also participates in the Cooperative Library Network Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV) and contributes to the Zeitschriftendatenbank (ZDB).
