The reconstructed medieval settlement offers a vivid insight into the daily life of the rural population who lived here eight centuries ago. There are houses, granaries and gardens to explore, and the chance to try your hand at archery. In the fields, wild fallow grass grows alongside sown crops such as winter rye and hemp. There are also typical farm animals of the Middle Ages, including the Skudden, a breed of sheep in danger of extinction. Their spring lambs are a source of joy not only for families with children.
A guided tour in German explains how the original settlement was discovered, on the site of which the museum village now stands. You’ll learn what the archaeologists’ findings have revealed about the daily lives of the people who inhabited the area, and how everything is connected: the artefacts unearthed from the ground, the plants in the fields, and the huts behind the palisade. If you’d like to lend a hand, you can help at the historic rope-making workshop to twist a rope from plant fibres.
