What will the City Museum of the future look like? The [Werk]Räume ([Work]Spaces) show you how “Berlin’s memory” continues to evolve and how you can play an active role in the process.

Location
Märkisches Museum
Am Köllnischen Park 5
10179 Berlin

Information
The [Werk]räume could be visited until 31 December 2022. The project ended with the closure of the Märkisches Museum due to construction..

While the neighbouring [Probe]Räume ([Test]Spaces) show the inner workings of the museum and invite visitors to try it out for themselves, the [Werk]Räume present the plans for the “City Museum of the Future” outlined in the Stadtmuseum Berlin’s Masterplan 2025 and invite you to contribute ideas.

Each space shows you how the Stadtmuseum Berlin works on topics related to Berlin’s past and present, and who its partners are. [Werk]Räume are a place for visitors to ask and answer questions about the future of the museum, test new formats and contribute their own ideas.

Where do the museum objects come from? The [Werk]Räume also deal with the topic of provenance.

Junior curators use a moving sculpture to ponder the question of how visitors will move through a museum in the future. The curators of Stadtmuseum Berlin invite you behind the scenes: How do objects end up in a museum? Why is their origin story so important? How is it researched? And how should the museum collect and preserve the present for future generations? Conservation also plays an important role: here, a restorer lets us look over her shoulder as she works.
Space for exchange

The questions asked in this new exhibition area and the results of the participative projects offer new perspectives on visiting museums in the future. The rooms also provide ample space for exchange. The Stadtmuseum Berlin’s current building projects are also presented in the [Werk]Räume, including the future Museums- und Kreativquarter am Köllnischen Park (Museum and Creative Quarter at Köllnischer Park) and the Museumsdorf Düppel (Museum Village Düppel).

[Probe]Räume

What exactly is a museum? Who decides which objects are shown there? What do the exhibits tell us? And how does a museum relate to me? The [Probe]Räume ([Test]Spaces) were set up to explore these questions.
