Graphics, photos and objects

Courtyards characterise Berlin’s cityscape – as living spaces, workplaces, playgrounds or places of retreat. Their history is diverse, just like the people who fill them with life. With the special presentation ‘Berlin Courtyards’ on the 3rd floor of the Ephraim-Palais Museum, the Stadtmuseum Berlin invites you to explore these urban spaces between past and present.

The courtyards are exemplary of urban coexistence with all its contradictions. They show how people shape space and encourage us to take a closer look:What do they tell us about Berlin?
What about ourselves? In short: What is going on in the courtyard?

The special atmosphere of Berlin’s courtyards has always inspired people to create pictures. In this special presentation, you will therefore encounter historical objects as well as graphic and photographic highlights from the collections of the Stadtmuseum Berlin.

In addition, the artists and urban researchers Duygu Örs and Sinthujan Varatharajah have created new works especially for ‘Berliner Höfe’. They deal with different sensory impressions from backyards in Wedding – sounds, smells and light.

On top of this, the junior curators from the Refik Veseli School in Kreuzberg and their mentor Yella Höpfner are presenting their own areas in the permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT on the first and first floors of the museum. Their individual stories interact with objects from the collection. And you are also in demand! Our photo call ‘Berlin now!’ invites you to send in your personal pictures of the Berlin courtyards. This will create new, unexpected views of seemingly everyday places.
