Uniforms for a modern palace

A very modern building – the Palace of the Republic – was erected here in 1976 where the original Berlin Palace had stood. The idea was to bring politics and culture together.

The clothing for its personnel reflected the style of the building. The GDR Fashion Institute was commissioned to design uniforms for the different departments. They were based on the general colour and material scheme for the Palace developed by designer Gertraude Pohl.
A few uniforms were sewn at the Fashion Institute’s tailor shop, but most were made in East Berlin’s clothing factories.

Selected uniforms can be seen in the BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition in the room Fashion.

Für eine Überraschung gut: die begehbare Diskokugel im Raum Vergnügen.
