When it was founded in 1962, it set itself the goal of establishing a museum for Berlin history and culture in West Berlin, because after the Wall was built, the Märkisches Museum was only accessible with a pass to East Berlin. After the fall of the Wall and reunification, the association members advocated the merger of the two Berlin collections, which was accomplished with the establishment of the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin in 1995.

From its initial role as the museum’s “legal entity”, the Friends have increasingly expanded their activities. Since then, they have been geared to the current needs of the Stadtmuseum Berlin, which it supports with great commitment.

Bringing Berlin’s city history to life

To date, the association’s members have made around 400 acquisitions possible through their contributions and donations. In addition, the association supports the public relations work, the exhibitions and the events of the Stadtmuseum Berlin. It is a special concern of the association to inspire children and young people for the city history of Berlin and the offers of the museum. For this reason, it is involved in the museum’s outreach activities in a variety of ways.

In order to promote the exchange of members and the common experience, the association invites its members to several exclusive events every year and regularly informs them about the life of the association and the museum.

Five good reasons for membership

  1. Get involved with one of the largest city museums in Germany.
  2. Meet and exchange ideas with like-minded people who are interested in the history and culture of Berlin.
  3. Participate in exclusive events of the association, such as previews or excursions.
  4. Receive regular news from the Stadtmuseum Berlin and the association via newsletters and member newsletters.
  5. Visit all Stadtmuseum Berlin facilities free of charge with the membership card and benefit from discounts on selected events.
