In this edition of the WELTSTUDIO special, everything revolves around materials that often end up in the bin – and the creative potential still hidden within them. Together with KUNST-STOFFE e.V., the Centre for Sustainable Cultural Practice, we explore the intersections of environmental education, design, and material cycles.

Families, children and adults are warmly invited to create, build and discover – whether you have prior experience or are simply curious.

What to bring (if you can):

Old bicycle inner tubes, magazines or books, small electronic devices – anything at home that no longer serves a purpose.

Programme in the WELTSTUDIO

11:00–17:00
Rubber Upcycling
With crochet hooks, scissors and a bit of skill, old bicycle inner tubes are transformed into bags, belts, masks or jewellery. The team from KUNST-STOFFE e.V. will be on hand to guide and support.

Giant Rubbish Mandala
Together we’ll create a large mandala from colourful plastic waste – inspired by Buddhist power images. Along the way, we’ll ask: What is rubbish? What is still usable? And how does this affect our everyday lives?

Build Your Own Electro-Monster
Electronic waste contains a vast range of materials that cause environmental and social problems around the world. With the help of material experts from KUNST-STOFFE e.V., we’ll take apart old devices and turn them into imaginative monsters with superpowers.

Creative Booklets from Waste Paper
Inspired by the Argentinian project Eloisa Cartonera, we’ll fold and bind unique notebooks from seemingly useless paper – including book pages, magazines and posters.

Interactive Talks in the Lounge

13:30 and 15:00 (approx. 30 minutes each)
Material Cycles in Everyday Life
What happens to waste after we throw it away? Who is involved – and what role do we play? This interactive talk explains the bigger picture and shows how we can all contribute to change.

Short Guided Tours in BERLIN GLOBAL – “Fashion” Room

Meeting point: Thread Cartographer in the WELTSTUDIO
Times: 11:30 | 12:30 | 15:30 (approx. 30 minutes each)
Join a guide to explore the “Fashion” section of the exhibition. How has clothing changed over time? What do fabrics tell us about society? And what can we do to counter fast fashion?

With crochet hooks, scissors and a bit of skill, old bicycle inner tubes are transformed into bags, belts, masks or jewellery. The team from KUNST-STOFFE e.V. will be on hand to guide and support.

Kunst-Stoffe e.V. is a Berlin-based reuse centre for salvaged and reusable materials. Since 2006, this non-profit organisation has been collecting surplus and used materials (such as wood, textiles, and plastics) from businesses and making them affordably available to artists, educators, and the general public. In open workshops, creative sessions and repair cafés, visitors can work hands-on with these materials – experiencing both the joy of making and the principles of resource conservation and circular economy in action.
