Stories of Resistance and Renewal in BERLIN GLOBAL. Public tandem tour with Anuscheh Amir-Khalili
On 21 March, around 300 million people worldwide celebrate the spring festival of Nouruz (Persian), also known as Newroz (Kurdish), as a symbol of new beginnings, togetherness, joy, and a deep connection to nature. Anuscheh Amir-Khalili, founder of Flamingo e.V. and curator of the Open Space “Dara Tûyê – درخت توت – The Mulberry Tree”, leads a tour through the BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition, linking the festival to stories of resistance and solidarity.
Amir-Khalili speaks about the transcultural garden “Hevrîn Xelef” as a place of encounter and healing for displaced women in Berlin, where grief and hope, remembrance and renewal come together. She highlights the feminist revolution that took root in the Kurdish regions of north-eastern Syria (Rojava) in 2012 and, through the call “Jin Jiyan Azadî” (Woman, Life, Freedom), laid the foundation for the Jina Revolution of 2022 in Iran.
She also situates Nouruz/Newroz within its political context: in Iran, people celebrate the festival with dancing and singing, even though both are forbidden there – an act of resistance that transcends religious boundaries.
“In recent months, the Islamist regime has once again transformed a new wave of protests by peaceful civilians into a graveyard. Nowruz will be marked this year by the memory of those who have been brutally murdered in Iran”, says Amir-Khalili.
Finally, Amir-Khalili addresses structures of solidarity with displaced people in Berlin. The New Year festival offers everyone an opportunity to come together and build deeper connections.
