A small box of charred grape seeds raises big questions. An open conversation with students.

Students of museum management at HTW Berlin shed light on the obscure past of 5,000-year-old grape seeds from an ancient Egyptian tomb. Why were they left there? What do they tell us about the deceased? How did they end up in Europe, and why did their journey end at the Berlin City Museum?
This ‘Object of the Month’ raises many questions about the intertwining of power politics, science and the appropriation of museum objects. The students have curated an accompanying exhibition titled Grains of “Memory – Kernfragen”, which critically explores the history of the object through artistic and scientific perspectives. It will be on display from 30 January to 8 February 2026 at the Kiezkapelle Neukölln.
